What are the benefits of obtaining a Medical Marijuana Card?
Many residents of Massachusetts and Rhode Island find value in obtaining a medical marijuana card for several reasons:
- Oversight by a Healthcare Provider: A relationship is established with a clinician knowledgeable in the proper use of medical marijuana, ensuring you receive tailored treatment and guidance.
- Legal Protection: Having a medical marijuana card provides liability protection, which is particularly important for those with jobs or who drive, as it validates your cannabis use as a legitimate medical treatment.
- Access to Higher Quality and Potency: Patients can access edibles and other products with higher THC concentrations to effectively manage their symptoms.
- Tax Exemptions: In Massachusetts purchases of medical marijuana are exempt from sales tax and fees, providing significant savings—typically around 20% or more. In Rhode Island there is no tax on Medical Marijuana.
- Liability Protection: Patients enrolled in the Medical Use of Marijuana Program in Massachusetts or Rhode Island have peace of mind knowing their cannabis use is recognized as legitimate medicine by the state. This validation is especially important for those who are employed or drive, providing legal protection for their medical marijuana use.
- Local Access: Medical marijuana is available in those communities that have opted to prohibit recreational cannabis, ensuring you have access to your needed medication.

Why Do I Need Medical Marijuana Certification and Registration?
Certification is the process conducted by our medical practitioner, confirming that you have a qualifying condition for a medical marijuana card. This is an essential step to access the benefits of medical marijuana legally.
Registration is your responsibility and involves submitting your information online to the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC). Rhode Island residents use the online Rhode Island DPH MMJ Program. This step is crucial as it establishes your identity and residency for the state’s medical marijuana program.
Both certification and registration require annual renewal, but keep in mind that in Massachusetts, the certification and registration renewal dates may differ—ranging from a few days to several weeks or months. Your medical marijuana card will have the same expiration date as your registration, making it vital to keep track of these dates to avoid any lapses in your eligibility.
NOTE: The Massachusetts CCC or Rhode Island MMJ Program will send you email reminders 30-60 days before your certification expires and 30-60 days before your registration expires. Sixty days in advance is a good time to renew registration (as the expiration date stays the same). However, 60 days in advance is too soon to renew certification (as it resets the expiration date). Plan to recertify within a week or two of your certification expiration date.
How much does it cost?
The fee for first-time certification is $150. Recertification for returning patients is $100, new patients that are looking for recertifications, the fee is $125.
